For a bit of asset allocation in the same fund, balanced mutual funds invest in a diversified mix of stocks and fixed-income securities. In allocating fund assets between stocks and bonds, the portfolio managers assess the relative return and risk of each asst class, analyzing factors that may include general economic conditions, anticipated future changes in interest rates and the outlook for stocks and bonds in general.
